I love the picture of your children checking the hive! It is a puzzle of why your strong hive perished and your weak hive survived. I am always wary as I put my hive together, moving slowly as to not crush bees. I still find evidence of fatalities the next time I open the hive! If you do not find a swarm, you might do a split and let your new hive raise their own queen!
