Bloomin' Good weekend!

My hubby had drill this weekend so I decided to spend it with my parents at the ranch. My step mom is a seamstress, so I decided to enlist her help to make a pair of bloomers for Hailey. This is my first time making a garment. Hey, this looks simple, right? This is how not crafty I am. I would have never figured out how to do this if I hadn't had hands-on, step by step instructions. Reading directions seems to confuse me, so hands-on demos are right up my alley. All was going well -we had everything cut out and had it halfway sewed together. We took a little break to say good-bye to my brother and his family (Jaws theme). I came back into the sewing room just as Hailey snipped a good 2 inch gash into the bottom of one bloomer. Yikes! I admit that I did freak out a little, but according to my step mom, I did good. My very level-headed step mom saved the day by using some interfacing to pull it back together, thank God it ended up being on the inside of the leg so I can just put a small zig zag stitch on the cut. Also, the lace I used at the bottom was white and didn't go at all. I'd seen people dye Easter eggs with tea, so I decided to try it with this lace. It turned out great! It looks very vintage. I can't believe how long it took me to make this, but it was worth it.

I really liked sewing on Diana's antique sewing machine. I have a modern day, cheap Brothers machine at home. It does the job, but I really loved using this machine. Thank you, Diana, for taking the time to teach me! I really had fun with you.

Nope, I didn't sew these aprons. I bet you were just about to get impressed! I found these for only $19.98 in the Victorian Trading Post catalog. I showed Stacie what I was thinking of getting, so in a rare "twin moment" we decided to both get one. I think as we get older our tastes are merging. This picture doesn't do these aprons justice (I'm hoping Stacie has a better one that she'll post on her blog), but I promise you, they are simply delicious! I got mine in the mail on a day that I was wearing my motorcycle clothing. My hubby cracked up when he came home to see his motorcycle mama in a frilly apron with motorcycle boots on! I've got more pictures to post of this weekend, but that is all I have time for at the moment. I'm so behind on catching up with my blog list. I'm hoping to stop by some of your blogs soon.

God Bless,
Jackie

  1. Congrats on the first sewing project! I've been sewing since I was 8 - I could sew bloomers in my sleep! Wait, I think I have. I don't know why the pattern companies have to make the directions so complicated; a friend of mine in another state was making pj pants for her daughter, she asked me for the how to's for the same reason, the pattern was just weird. Hope you continue to learn sewing. Oh, I love the antique machine, I learned to sew on a Singer that only went forward, then we got one that had backstiching on it - I thought we were rich!

  3. Hi Jackie, I have to tell you that I've been sewing since I was 15...that's hmmm, about, well just shy of 40 years ago, and I still hate making bloomers! I've made them twice, and thank goodness, my grandgirls are now too big to wear them!

Thanks so much for following me! I'm serious when I say I don't know where I'm going, but I do love the company! I'm a little all over the place with my blog...a little this and that...but it reflects who I am, so I guess that's what its all about! I am enjoying your blog, and will be stopping in often!

    Take care, and God bless!

  4. I have been longing to pick up sewing again lately. I don't know why! I used to hate it! I wonder what God is doing!!
Your aprons are so cute! I would think that would be a pretty funny scene to come home to a motorcycle momma in motorcycle boots and a frilly apron. :)
Sounds like you had a great time visiting your family.

  5. The bloomer are so cute! The tea thing does work so well. I had to use the trick for some wedding stuff.

The aprons are terrific - with or without the motorcycle boots!

  6. Well done! Bloomers are too adorable!! :) That must feel great to know you did it yourself...AND you maintained composure over the gash! That would have taken a LOT of grace!
    Blessings,

  7. Loved your apron story!

I had a wonderful time with you, even though it was short.

When I wear my apron I think of you.

Those bloomers are so adorable! I can't wait to see them on her. Good job!

  9. HI Jackie! Oh wow, well, you know more than I do. I haven't talked to my mom yet so I didn't know that about my dad. WOW! Thanks for letting me know. Man I hate living in another country. I can't even be there for my folks. Anyway, I'll talk to my mom sometime today.

And thanks for the prayers about Bob's job situation. The whole thing just stinks.

  11. That's so funny about your daughter cutting them. I glad they could be fixed. My daughter cuts her hair every time she gets ahold of the scissors. She's done it four or five times in the last two years. We think cosmetology school may be in her future. Anyway, I'm glad to be an inspiration to you. The bloomers are so cute. AND, I am jealous that you have maple leaves. We live in an area of the country that can't grow that type of tree. And they are so pretty. But God blessed us with other things. Have a wonderful day.
